THE EASYBEATS
Formerly called "Starfighters", "The Easybeats" were a rock band formed in Sydney (Australia), in the 60s (1964). The members were: Steve Wright, the singer; Harry Vanda and George Young, the guitarists; Dick Diamonde, the bassist; and Gordon Fleet, the drummer.
They were one of the few groups in Australia that composed and recorded original songs. In 1966 they moved to England. Their only success was achieved with the single "Friday on my mind" (number 6 in Great Britain). However, their excellent compositions did not catch the attention of the British public, so they decided to split up in 1969.
BEE GEES
"The Bee Gees" were a group made up of three brothers: Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb. The group was born in 1958 when they moved to Australia after the World War. They previously lived in England.
They were especially successful from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. They were a major figure in disco music. They were known as The Disco Kings or The Kings of Dance Music.
They won several awards for "Saturday Night Fever", the turning point of their career. They composed many of their songs themselves, as well as other hits for other celebrities.
DADDY COOL
"Daddy Cool" wasan Australian rock band consisting of: Wayne Duncan, Ross Hannaford, Ross Wilson and Gary Young. It was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1970.
They debuted with "Eagle Rock" in 1971, which was already a hit as it was number 1 on the Australian singles chart for ten weeks. Their musical style was originally largely 1950s Doo-wop style cover versions and originals mostly written by Wilson.
In 1972 they disbanded, but got back together again in 1974 until 1975.
AC/DC
AC/DC was an Australian rock band formed by Scottish brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. They were later joined by Bon Scott, Phil Rudd and Mark Evans. The band formed in Sydney in 1973.
Their music was considered to be of various kinds, but they simply called it "rock and roll". Throughout his entire career the lineup underwent many changes until now. Their eighth studio album "For Those About to Rock We Salute You" (1981), was his first album to reach number 1 in the United States. Also, "Back in Black" was another of his great successes as millions of units were sold all over the world.
They were also included in the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list.
INXS
"inxs", formerly The Farriss Brothers, was an Australian rock band consisting of: Garry Gary Beers, Andrew Farriss, Jon Farriss, Tim Farriss, Michael Hutchence and Kirk Pengilly. It emerged in 1977 in Sydney, New South Wales.
They were known for their new wave/pop style, later developing a harder pub rock style. Their first number 1 hit in Australia was with "Original Sin", they later achieved international fame with their albums "Listen Like Thieves", "Kick" and "X", as well as their singles "What You Need", "Need You Tonight", "Devil Inside" and more.
INXS has sold over 80 million albums worldwide, making them one of Australia's highest selling music acts of all time.
COLD CHISEL
"Cold Chisel" was an Australian pub rock band consisting of: Ian Moss, Steve Prestwich and Don Walker. Jimmy Barnes and Phil Small joined later.
The band formed in Adelaide in 1973. They combined rockabilly, hard rock and rough-house soul'n'blues. His top 10 singles were "Forever Now", "Hands Out of My Pocket" and "The Things I Love in You".
At the ARIA Music Awards of 1993 they were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Cold Chisel's popularity is largely restricted to Australia and New Zealand. The group disbanded in late 1983.
MEN AT WORK
"Men At Work" were an Australian rock band consisting of: Colin Hay, Ron Strykert, Jerry Speiser, Greg Ham and John Rees. The group formed in Melbourne in 1978.
They are known for some of their hits like "Who Can It Be Now?" and "Down Under". In 1983 they were the first Australian artists to have the number 1 album and singles on the United States Billboard charts with "Business as Usual" and "Down Under".
In 1994 They were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In 1984 Speiser and Rees were asked to leave the group. After the recording of the "Two Hearts" album, Ham also left, leaving Hay alone. In 2019 Hay revived "Men At Work" again by touring with a backing band.
MIDNIGHT OIL
"Midnight Oil" were an Australian rock band consisting of: Peter Garrett, Rob Hirst, Jim Moginie, Martin Rotsey, Andrew James and Peter Gifford. The group formed in Sydney in 1972.
The group achieved popularity in Australasia with "10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1", with the singles "Power and the Passion" and "US Forces". They reached the number 1 album in Australia with "Red Sails". They also gained international fame with their album "Diesel and Dust" and the singles "The Dead Heart" and "Beds Are Burning".
They won 11 ARIA Awards. They were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame in 2006. Writer Andrew Street described them as "one of Australia's most beloved bands".
The group disbanded in 2002, but in 2016 they announced a full-scale reformation.
CROWDED HOUSE
The band formed in Melbourne in 1985. They became very famous in Australia and New Zealand, and also internationally with their hits "Don't Dream It's Over" and "Something So Strong".
Their success spread across the UK, Europe and South Africa with their third and fourth albums and the album tracks "Recurring Dream". In 1996 they disbanded, but in 2006 they returned, some of the members being replaced by their children.
In 2016 the band was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In 2021 they sold more than 15 million albums worldwide.
YOU AND I (YOU AM I)
"You an I were" an Australian alternative rock band consisting of: Tim Rogers, David Lane, Andy Kent and Rusty Hopkinson. The band formed in 1989 in Sydney, New South Wales.
They were the first Australian group to release three consecutive number 1 albums on the ARIA Albums Chart: "Hi Fi Way", "Hourly, Daily" and "#4 Record". With "What I Don't Know 'bout You" they got nine of their songs to appear on the related ARIA Singles Chart top 50.
The band received ten ARIA Music Awards. Fourteen of their songs have been placed on the related annual Hottest 100 lists with "Heavy Heart". The group is currently still active.
SAVAGE GARDEN
"Savage Garden" were an Australian pop duo consisting of Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones. The duo formed in Brisbane, Queensland in 1993.
They achieved international success with "I Want You", "To the Moon and Back", "Truly Madly Deeply", "The Animal Song" and "I Knew I Loved You".
Their albums "Savage Garden" and "Affirmation" reached number 1 in Australia and the top 10 in the USA and the UK. They won ten ARIA Music Awards. In 2001 they disbanded and Hayes continued as a solo artist.
